"A Legacy of Love" February 3, 2019 MDA Black History Month Devotional

Today's Black History Month devotional is "A LEGACY OF LOVE" by Nailah Tee

Matthew 22:37-39 – Jesus said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all
your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great
commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’

2019 marks 400 years since the beginning of the slave trade in West Africa and is
also the 4th year of the United Nation’s declaration of the International Decade for
People of African Descent. Suffice to say, this year’s celebration of Black History is
exceptionally significant.

It is impossible to consider the history of people of African descent without
acknowledging the role of Christianity – which was a tool used to both ensure our
enslavement and to secure our freedom. So, how do we balance our solemn
contemplation with our celebration of liberation? I believe there are three steps
involved:

1. Acknowledge: Acknowledge our history from a godly perspective; including the
church’s role in the development of our communities and ask God to help us forgive
our brothers and sisters who promoted our oppression.

2. Accept: Accept that our responsibility is to impact our community through God’s
love towards our culture and ask God to help us to be conduits of His love on the
earth daily.

3.  Anchor: Anchor our behavior and attitudes in The Word and ask God to help us love
Him with all our heart, soul and mind and to love our neighbours as ourselves.

Singer/Songwriter NailahTee’s natural talent for music was recognized early, and led to her becoming a member of various school and children’s choirs. As a teen, Nailah joined The Toronto Children’s Concert Choir (TC3) which transformed and matured her sound. She is currently a valued member of her church choir, as well as a background singer for a wide range of gospel singers, musicians and worship leaders. Nailah’s debut album, Ready for Anything evolved out of her personal poetry. Life experiences, good and bad, inspired poems which eventually became song lyrics. Ready for Anything evokes a modern, eclectic gospel sound which explores love, self-awareness and overcoming challenges grounded by a celebration of God. nailahtee.com

  1. Accepting responsibility is something we often struggle with.
